Perhaps it was Gary's upbringing in the Silent Generation, his armed services training, or his devotion to his wife Donna and their children that fueled his drive to build a multi-generational company spanning over four decades. These factors likely empowered Gary to make decisions that led to an exceptional life for his family and employees.
Following an honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force in May 1960, Gary joined Liberty National Life Insurance Company, eventually becoming a Staff Manager. From 1971 to 1974, he worked as a loan servicer for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development before becoming Executive Vice President at an Ohio-based real estate company.
In June 1978, Gary founded Marcrum Management Company with laser focus and determination. He ran the company like an Army Staff Sergeant, growing it from a single office building to managing 50 properties across 11 states. In addition, he pursued ownership interests and co-developed two tax credit properties, participating in 17 additional tax credit properties.
Gary received the IREM "CPM" designation in 1975, served in executive positions within the North Alabama Chapter of The Institute of Real Estate Management, and was active on housing committees for the Birmingham mayor. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Dallas/Fort Worth Association of HUD Managing Agents for two years.
Gary was a devoted family man passionate about piloting and boating, earning both captain's and private pilot's licenses. Mr. Marcrum, survived by his wife, two children, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, passed away in 2009. Today, his legacy lives on through the company he founded, and we proudly carry on his vision and establishing principles.
